onStage Pittsburgh: Don’t laugh. John Updike, who grew up outside this Central Pennsylvania city, set his “Rabbit” novels there. Nottage, one of the country’s most honored playwrights, moved to the faded industrial town to research Sweat, her study of working-class people whose lives were upended and, in some cases, destroyed by the 2008 recession.

I’m super excited to see this play. Their first preview performance is on Saturday and I’m still deciding whether or not it’s worth seeing it now or waiting until it’s fully open. Lyn Nottage wrote Sweat which we all read during Foundations of drama I. That play is such a phenomenal slice of life piece so I’m super excited to see what this play has in store. I’ve actually been super impressed with the shows I’ve seen at city theater because I’ve seen a handful of shows at the public and a handful at city theater and I think the choice of plays are just better. Last year I saw the garbologists and paradise blue which were both absolutely phenomenal and I’ve seen little shop of horrors and murder on the orient express at the public which are both fun and very spectacle heavy, but I would argue not as interesting theater.
