I just want to talk about one of my favorite shows, which is on this list - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I had a phase where I learned every word to this show in middle school, and I still really love it. Some find it annoying, which I can understand, but I think what people find grating is embedded within the charm of the show. Its mechanism of bringing audience members up on stage to spell is unique in establishing a relationship with its audience, immediately breaking the fourth wall. In terms of the score, some of it is really beautiful, and a lot of it is deceptively hard. There’s some ridiculous harmonies within “Pandemonium” and “Second.” When in a group and someone brings up Spelling Bee, almost always one person will say “I don’t like the show,” and then someone else will respond with “You haven’t heard ‘The I Love You Song.’” That’s what I find so endearing about Spelling Bee - is how deceptively wonderful it is. My friend recently played Schwartzy, and seeing her run out of the theater crying after being eliminated was truly heart-wrenching. In the same show, you have a song subtitled “My Unfortunate Erection.” Its simplicity truly allows the rawness of both the characters and the comedy affect the audience to the max. Definitely a huge dream to be in - so jealous of the juniors right now.
