DeWalt 20V Max 2-Inch Cordless Magnetic Drill Press DCD1623
www.protoolreviews.com: Magnetic drills aren’t a new concept, however, not many brands have jumped on board to produce cordless versions yet. DeWalt proves it’s up for the challenge with its Cordless 20V Magnetic Drill Press. The design team did more than just make a corded tool cordless, though—there’s some real innovation built in.

This is interesting to me – I’ve never seen a cordless/portable drill press, or even really knew that they existed. I really like that it has a base magnet that works even when the battery is not charged; I feel like DeWalt batteries are hit or miss sometimes – maybe the ones that are misses for me are just old and not well taken care of. However, I love DeWalt, my personal tools are just about all DeWalt, and my undergraduate shop was stocked with DeWalt everything. I do wonder how well this works as I typically only really use a drill press when I’m looking for precision and stability, and I wonder how well this tool stands up to hefty materials. The price tag does look… a bit high, but I’m also not sure who the typical client/user of this would be as it is specifically magnetic and portable. Regardless, it seems like a great tool, and I’ll be looking into it further for sure, just out of curiosity.
I'm very curious how long the battery on this thing would last drilling holes in box tube for four hours. I personally hate the experience of endlessly drilling holes in steel so when I saw this there was a minor upwelling of joy at the idea of not having to press on a cordless drill to make bolt holes. I have DeWalt tools as far as my personal drills and drivers go and think they are well suited to the task. But I just feel like I would never have enough batteries on hand to use this thing for longer durations of time. Granted, maybe this is a more ideal tool for those one off scenarios where you weren't expecting to need a drill press in that moment..but if that's the case then this would be a pretty hard sell to me. Regardless, I am always happy to see early iterations of what could one day be very viable tech. So, sweet!
So cool for many reasons. 1) a magnet to attach the drill press to the sheet of metal? Insane. I also think it’s cool that it can go up to 1/4” thickness before having to actually be plugged in to anything, the magnet is just that strong. I will say, I’ve never heard of a magnetic drill press before. I had to look it up to actually understand what it does, but now it makes total sense. It’s probably very useful to have the but you’re drilling not move and be in the precise place you put it. Also The gave thats its running on one of their 20V batteries is so sweet, because who doesn’t love battery powered tools. I don’t think I’ll ever need a battery powered drill press but if I ever do need one I know where to get one or rent one. And I can trust it because it’s Dewalt baby!
