Pittsburgh university students create spaces to talk about mental health during the pandemic

www.publicsource.org: Facing a deepening pandemic, another stretch of mostly online classes and a national backdrop of political turmoil, Pittsburgh-area students are turning to their colleges — and to each other — to meet growing mental health needs. Kayla Koch, a senior at the University of Pittsburgh, said students were already struggling with the transition that college life brings, but the pandemic has made everything harder.

I was super shocked at first when they said that use of mental health services decline almost 30% this year even though I know that suicides have doubled. But then it explained that more people are at home and therefore can’t use them or have a good family structure for support. I know for me personally, this last year has been really hard for me mentally and emotionally and I’ve been able to use CAPS to help me find a long term counselor. The isolation has brought a lot of stuff out that I’ve been ignoring for a while and it’s nice to know that it’s not just me. Pretty much all my friends that I’ve reached out to have struggled in one way or another because of isolation and political turmoil. One quote from the article that really hit home was: "We are all living through a trauma and expected to produce and exist as if we are not.” It was significant to me because I’ve found myself more emotionally volatile this year and less willing to start projects because of stress.
