9 techniques to help you appear more confident on Zoom

Business Insider: At least once a week, I hear from leaders who ask, "How do I project more executive presence?" And now, in light of the ongoing global pandemic, these same top performers wonder how to capture ever-elusive executive presence in virtual meetings as well.

After reading this article, there wasn't a technique that necessarily blew my mind or was surprising. The only things that I did not consider or know were the zoom backgrounds. This article does not recommend using such as there are many ways it can glitch and be distracting. However, I disagree with this. I feel that because we are working from home, or in an unprofessional environment, and not necessarily everyone can have a private workspace, the zoom background can be important in conveying professionalism. I definitely agree that animatic virtual backgrounds or funny pictures can be inappropriate and distracting, but I believe that in some cases, having a blank background or one of the office environments can be better than one's own home. Other than that, I was actually disappointed in the amount of information in this article. It was published today, but we have been doing zoom meetings for ten months now. Things like sitting up straight and looking into the camera are obvious tips to being presentable online. I was hoping for more techniques and explanations on how your voice gets transmitted through zoom. Often times my colleagues or professors sound like they are talking out of a can, or their camera goes in and out of focus. These are the issues that I would like tips on to ensure confidence through the computer. Especially since we will never know how we are coming across connection wise to the other people in the meeting.
