Man Tells Plane Passengers He's Infected With Coronavirus

gizmodo.com: A Canadian man who announced he was infected with the new coronavirus during a WestJet flight from Toronto to Jamaica on Monday says he was trying to make a viral video, according to a new report from Canada’s Global News. The plane turned around after the man, identified as 28-year-old James Potok, stood up and told other passengers that he was sick. Potok was evaluated and eventually arrested after the plane landed.

This is just crazy. When I first started reading this article I thought it was just gonna be about a guy who had coronavirus on a plane, but then I kept reading and I realized that he was lying. I do not understand how this guy could think it was okay to lie about such a serious topic especially just to get attention. He said that he stood up on the plane and announced to the other passengers that he had coronavirus to try and create a viral video. And the poor people on the plane must have been so freaked out, not to mention the pilot who then turned the plane around! The guy did say he felt some remorse when they turned around the plane but otherwise he didn’t seem to see how ridiculous this whole thing. This is a great example of how messed up our society is starting to become. The fact that some guy was willing to create mass hysteria just to create a video that could potentially make him internet famous is so sickening.

Some people just don’t think. That was his own fault, if you’re willing to say something like that for the sake of “art” than you better be willing to get in trouble for your art. Come on dude, just because you want some views doesn’t mean you joke about a deadly virus. He wasted so many people's time. I’m not surprised that someone like this didn’t know any concrete facts about the epidemic that he was using as a bit to get views online. Stupidity surprises me sometimes. Well, he got his publicity, good for him, I’m glad he wasted a lot of people’s time and money. I hope he learned his lesson and I hope that this teaches other people (who want to not think through their decisions) and yeah, an airplane is NOT the place to have fun and explore comedy. If you really want to do it while you travel, do it in the airport, but when you are miles above the ground, confined in a small tin can, and tired from traveling maybe people won’t appreciate your humor as much.

I remember seeing this on the news, and okay, this guy is just plain insane. The thing that stood out to me the most in this is the fact that he called himself an artist, and that he was creating “art.” Instilling panic on a population of people in an isolated metal capsule in the sky is not art, goodness!! I seriously don’t know what this guy was expecting the reaction would be, but not only did he cause fear and panic, he screwed with people’s schedules and caused a serious economic/environmental impact by making this plane turn around! I’m disappointed at the linkage of a news article that shows his face and name. I strongly believe that people like this who are attempting to achieve “viral” status by doing something harmful should not be glorified or publicized. I typically limit myself to news sources that blur the names and faces of these people who do not deserve recognition.
