Project Zero Launches Zero Carbon Roadie

TPi: Ocean conservation organisation Project Zero HAS announced Zero Carbon Roadie, an innovative carbon calculator that is set to support touring musicians’ efforts to mitigate their carbon footprints.

This brand-new tool can be used by music artists to reduce their impact on the environment resulting from travel, haulage, power generation and other activities that are part and parcel of touring. The tool uses the latest greenhouse gas emissions data to calculate total emissions and provide a picture of a tour’s overall carbon footprint.

This is a very important initiative. Touring musician acts have a massive carbon footprint, from transportation of hardware to the generation of power for the show, and it has a massive impact on our ecosystem and the world. This being said, a simple questionnaire or an analysis will not magically decrease the carbon footprint of a show. It can, however, inspire change – adjustments to the tour, the plans – perhaps slashing the number of moving fixtures used in the show, consolidating the hardware for less trucks to be used in trucking, looking for an eco-friendlier trucking company. Small adjustments like these have the potential to add up quickly to lower the overall carbon footprint of these shows. This sort of service, in addition to the option to invest in their blue carbon fund, is a step in the right direction for decreasing the carbon footprint of the entertainment industry. However, it is imperative that a similar service be implemented in the movie and television industry as it arguably has a larger carbon footprint than the touring music industry. Regardless, this is most definitely a step in the right direction and I appreciate the change that is beginning.
