Women in Audio Engineering

SoundGirls.org: During the first week of November, my alma mater, the DePaul University School of Music, held an 11-day music festival with numerous masterclasses, panel discussions, and concerts to commemorate the unveiling of its new Holtschneider Performance Center. I was asked to take part in the panel discussion sponsored by the Sound Recording Technology department titled Women in Audio Engineering.

It's always nice to see an article like this that highlights diversity and seeks to connect people together. While women are rapidly gaining a place in the sound industry, it is still a very male-dominated field, and there is a long way to go before anything resembling parity is achieved. Event's like DePaul's women in sound and organizations and groups like SoundGirls are integral to connecting people together so that they can identify and solve problems for women in sound engineering, so that they can inspire and aid younger professionals to pursue that career, or just so that the field seems a little less lonely from time to time. One of the many great things about the Carnegie Mellon sound department is that it is more than fifty per cent female and non-binary. A lot more than fifty per cent, actually. It is refreshing that while the industry is still male-saturated, educational institutions like DePaul and Carnegie Mellon that are training the next generation of industry leaders are extremely diverse, and committed to that diversity.
