It breaks my little Italian heart to think about the impact this disease is having on Northern Italy. In general it is saddening to think about all the pain and suffering and death that this disease is bringing people around the world. A few weeks ago there was an article with similar principles of this one that I had the opportunity to comment on. That one was about how the closing of movie theatres in China due to the spread of the virus would lead to overall income on the films, and this article discusses how many tourist sites and museums are having to close doors to the public due to concerns and outbreaks of the disease. I am concerned that this disease is spreading quietly and not showing symptoms until other cases in regions break out so people carry the disease elsewhere unknowingly. This is very concerning with spring break coming up for a lot of people who have plans to go to Europe over the break.
Every time I read a new article about the Covid19 epidemic and how it is spreading, it becomes more and more surreal. I remember when it first began to emerge, it was regarded as a big joke among the internet communities, with people making jokes about “World War III” and “Coronavirus” being the end of the world even though 2020 had only just begun. These jokes have since gone silent as the true gravity of the situation is becoming apparent. Covid19 is a serious threat to humanity at the moment. This is not only proven by the statistics of infections and deaths, but with such events as Italy closing its museums. Italy is easily home to some of the most famous museums in the world, with some of history’s most well-known artists calling Italy their home. It is truly heartbreaking to watch the stats grow increasingly higher and higher, as this not only means that the world has lost more and more innocent people to this terrifying disease, but it also shows just how difficult it is to control and just how severe this situation is becoming.
