One Year In, Artists Rep Reflects on Life without Space

Portland Monthly: “Not all who those wander are lost,” a sentiment penned by J. R. R. Tolkien, is a classic Etsy maxim, replicated on many a hand-stitched tea towel—but that makes it no less
true for the members of Artists Repertory Theatre.

The company is midway through its first year as a theater-in-exile while its longtime building in Goose Hollow is transformed into a state-of-the-art performance space and 21-story residential tower.

This is a familiar struggle to me, since my high school performing arts center was demolished to be rebuilt my senior year. We were essentially homeless as a theatre department for an entire school year, and had to travel to venues and other schools around the city to put on our performances. Not having a dedicated rehearsal or performance space really forces you to hone in on your systems and focus on your priorities as a department, but it also allowed us to get inventive with the kind of shows we wanted to present to the community we were able to reach a wider audience. We were actually able to present one of our most packed seasons yet and use the uncertainty to our advantage. More than anything, not having a dedicated space forces you to think outside the box, to come prepared, and to be ready and able to make necessary changes to a production on the fly, responding to the circumstances that are given to you.
