Gobo Projections + Augmented Reality Highlight The History Of Vitré, France

Rosco Spectrum: Vitré is a mediaeval city in France that’s been dubbed “The City of Art and History” due to its rich historical and cultural heritage. The city recently installed a nocturnal light tour, entitled “Vitré Lumières,” to highlight the city’s rich history. The lighting scheme for this tourist attraction was conceived by Quartiers Lumières in partnership with Noctiluca.

While the intent of this project is really beautiful and the idea of preserving and exhibiting the history of Vitre is very inspiring if I were a resident or a tourist I think I'd be put off by the projections. When I visit somewhere I want to think about how it existed in the time when it was built or the time when the prominent historical events occurred. I feel that having the gobo images on these sites would take away from that and hinder my ability to imagine what it was like before. I do think that it's very well thought out with the app, sounds, and proving the information and overall atmosphere but for those that don't want it I feel it could be distracting. If I wanted a nighttime picture of this historic building, I don't want some random projection on top of it. Also, just a personal note, the style of the projections reminds me of my highschool Cambridge Latin textbook and that's very offputting for me.

I never thought much of gobos. In my high school I never experimented a lot with them due to the limited quantity we had. It wasn't until the dancing department at my high school ordered a custom made gobo to display the dance logo on the main drape that I was introduced to gobos. I thought it was a very cool method and from this initial experience only thought that you can basically project light of different cut outs. This made me think about using light and custom gobos to create different items or logos on backdrops. This is something I never did but it was just my first experience with them. Shortly after I found the supply of texture gobos my school held and got to experiment with how those look on stage and against the actors. Custom gobos are really cool. I want to test them out more and see to what extents you can use them in shows. It is really neat that these gobos are used to The History Of Vitré, France. Light is a much more friendly (I guess you can call it that) way of using a wall for a projection rather than graffiti since many people discourage it as an art form. Light is temporary and leaves no wear and is perfect to view walking the streets of France at night.
