At the rehearsal for Tony's last year, I remember seeing Ali Stroker come out on stage with such energy and presence. She drew attention for every corner of the theatre with her character, voice, and energy in Oklahoma. I think the fact that theatre is becoming more inclusive in many different ways but especially accepting people with disabilities is long overdue and revolutionary. The leadership awards being given out are so well deserved and will inspire so many to gain the courage to chase their dreams despite their hinderers. It takes a lot of bravery and confidence to be able to come out on stage in front of thousands of people anyways, and I think Ali Stroker and the rest of the nominees are truly fearless. The initiative of putting people with disabilities onstage is a step in the right direction for theatre and performance in general- I’m excited to see what comes next.
