The Hybrid Museum Experience: Case Studies in Digital Engagement and Experience Design

AMT Lab @ CMU: As sites of learning and inquiry, museums aim to engage a variety of audiences within both the physical museum space and across digital platforms. With the increased access afforded by digitized collections and social media, museums are being faced with the challenge of meeting greater audience demand for interactive, personalized experiences that differentiate the museum visit and increase engagement with the institution and its collection.

Going into this article I was worried about whether or not these methods of incorporating technology into a museum setting would still be accessible to people who do not have access to personal smart devices, are hard of hearing or blind, or physically unable to interact with a display. However, the description of the hybrid use of traditional museum and digital and technological approaches to interact with museum visitors at the Museum of Old and New Art sounds as if it very accessible. I think the idea of going to a museum without any labels or explanations is very interesting – for me personally, the lack of context would make the museum experience disengaging because I like to know the story and history behind the objects in displays. However I think that the O is an effective way of giving museum goers the optional way of getting the story and context to displays, that have both an audio and text options, or experiencing the museum the way that David Walsh intended. This museum gets extra points for providing smart devices for museum goers if they want one to be able to use the O on their visit.
