When a Show Gets Cancelled, Make Art Anyway

HowlRound Theatre Commons: This past spring, Arizona State University’s School of Film, Dance, and Theatre was slated to produce By the Way, Meet Vera Stark by Lynn Nottage as part of the 2017–18 mainstage season. As a grad student at ASU, I was going to be acting in the show. However, within the first few weeks of rehearsals, due to circumstances outside of the production’s control—harassment accusations towards a core team member—it was cancelled.

This article made me really happy because it’s so important to produce art, and I’m glad these students persisted on when the opportunity to presented itself. I have a friend from my high school theatre program that goes to ASU and I’m honestly surprised that I’m just now hearing about this – but I’m glad at least I am now. This is an important story about young artists taking advantage of something being canceled to spread an important message through their art form. This proves to me that they’ve learned something valuable while in college, and it’s something I hope we all learn: it’s not about the presentation of the art as much as it is about the content of the art, and what the audience gets from it. I think a combination of breakdancing, hip hop, beatboxing, stepping, and singing would make for a very entertaining show that I would LOVE to see, even if the design elements were not really there, due to lack of funding and staff.
