Winter light displays have always fascinated me and gotten me into the holiday spirit. Even though they are often geared towards Christmas, I believe they can be loved and appreciated by all cultures and religions. One of the specific lights displays featured in this article match the outline of the buildings in Market Square. This caused me to think about how specific designers are hired to curate these displays, which are essentially art installations. These artists have to consider a variety of factors, just as we did for our Line and Form project for Basic Design. They had to ask themselves: How is the public interacting with the art? Is it a safety hazard? What message am I sending? How will it hold up in the winter, as the temperature drops, and snow begins to fall? This last question is a substantial one, but with proper consideration, absolutely lovely displays can paint the city with joy.
