Some of these graphs are a little difficult to discern what they are actually saying simply because of the over use of the term “Director.” However, parsing through the information there is a very slow very small over all increase of women-identifying and non-binary folx joining the ranks. However, this data also shows that the majority of these increases are coming from those folx being in positions of hiring and team deciding and not from places where the status quo of men holding a majority position are bringing more diverse genders to the table. What I think this is missing is what the gender ratio of the advisory boards that hire the artistic director in relationship to the gender of the artistic director is. Ultimately that’s who makes those decisions and if there is going to be a trickle down to the other positions, it needs to not stop with the Artistic Director, but go all the way up to the board.
