She Believed She Could: Asta Hostetter On Collaboration and Design

www.broadwayworld.com: When it comes to "how I got here" stories, Àsta Hostetter's is both incredibly unique and incredibly familiar. The costume designer, currently represented off-Broadway by Roundabout's Usual Girls, tells a story of surprise revelations and "almosts" that will probably sound familiar to a lot of theatre artists.

I think that it's funny that she fell into design because she knew how to sew because honestly, that is kind of how I started in design. I also think that her story is really inspiring because she did not decide she wanted to do theater when she was applying to college, she decided later and then had to work hard to 'catch up' to all the people who had studied this for years. In the article she says that people who are top tier may have done something different before. She says the people are told to specialize too early without fully learning the skills they will need and that the people who learn outside skills and then come into the industry may do better. I am not that inclined to agree with her point especially seeing that I am specializing in design right now but I think that learning outside skills is an important part of succeding in any career.
