Michael B. Jordan Leads Way as Hollywood Moves Toward Inclusion

Variety: As 2018 draws to a close, Hollywood continues to find itself under the microscope with regard to inclusion and representation in the industry. It appears some positive steps are indeed being taken toward rectifying a historically shameful track record of excluding women and people of color from executive suites and on both sides of the camera.

Inclusion in the industry is certainly something that is at the forefront of everyone’s minds, as it should be and it is great to see people leading the charge of making change. One of the executives interviewed talked about how these conversations were uncomfortable but good change was happening. I can not speak enough about the necessity of discomfort in these situations because it speaks to the fact that hard discussions are occurring and an awareness of things being wrong the way they currently are. Discomfort provides the opportunity as well as the necessity for growth whether that be as individuals or as an industry. In my opinion the current environment is the sort of stage where we’ve identified lots of problems but now we have to have those conversations that are uncomfortable in order to make real improvements and having those leaders that are making the initial push to do that is a way to try and start a domino effect of sorts. We can try to solve problems without discussing them thoughtfully and thoroughly but then the real root of the problem isn’t being identified and we can come up with purposeful solutions.

Inclusion is a huge word to live up to. That being said, it is high time that the various industries do start their work to live up to the responsibilities of the word.
Inclusion seems to me like an unalienable right, something that is deserved by everyone. It cannot be something that can be infringed upon by anyone.
That is why it is high time that people in power and who are part of industries that reflect the society that we live in, primarily that media, film and television industry, need to start working towards an atmosphere that functions on the principle of inclusion. And the fact that this process has already started is confirmed by this article, through the example of Michael Jordan.
Hollywood has constantly been under the radar for this principle and rightly so because it has had a shameful history of excluding women and people of color from either being a part of the industry or being denied to play roles that truly reflect their actual capabilities.
But with Michael Jordan comes hope that this might be something that people are going to work towards to change.
