How Nick Cave Discovered His Purpose as an Artist
www.artsy.net: The Chicago-based artist and educator Nick Cave is best known for his majestic “Soundsuits”—wearable, sculptural forms meticulously assembled from beads, buttons, fabric, sequins, twigs, and other materials. Trained as both a visual artist and dancer, Cave activates these creations by having local dancers stage exuberant public performances in cities around the world.

It is always fascinating to read about individuals' process of exploration and discovery in creating their art. I feel like it can sometimes be too easy to settle into a routine of simply accomplishing tasks, without much artistic exploration or sense of self-improvement, and stories like this help remind me to keep practicing through the perspective of an artist, and a student. Nick Cave is a highly sophisticated artist, and hearing of his success inspires me to continue improving my own art and work in theater. We must all aspire to find our own vision and practice as Nick Cave has in this piece, albeit with the notable difference of Theater's emphasis on collaboration. Indeed, a truly successful piece of theater requires more than one realized artistic vision, rather the successful fusion of multiple visions to achieve a common goal.
I’m reading and discovering this article at a weirdly convenient time. I have been using the New York public transportation system all day and I am currently on a New York train, LIRR. Taking a closer look at this system that gets millions of people form on place to another in such a crowded and ever moving city, I can see how this is inspiring. It is a constant pulse and sometimes a stream. I am being inspired by the movement of the train I am on as I am writing it. All of the other passengers on the train are feeling the movement as well and responding in different ways. The way Cave was inspired by this system is fascinating. He went back to the historical roots an combined it with the powerful movement of the Alvin Ailey Company. Ailey is one of my favorite dancers and his style is truly mesmerizing. This would have been such a cool piece to experience because it would be so captivating and unexpected to the commuter that travels that path everyday passing the landscape on autopilot without noticing their surroundings. But, with this piece by Cave it would force people out of their busy lives for a moment into a space where they can experience art and the beauty of the pulsing city around them.
