World Maker Faire 2013 Roundup

hackaday.com: One of the more interesting structures at WMF was a garden shed made entirely out of plywood cut with the Handibot. It’s a handheld luggable CNC router that allows you to place the machine over a work piece, punch some settings into the software, and cut mortises, CNC engravings, and just about any other shape you can imagine.

The projects that this roundup highlights are very cool each in it's own way.

Last year I read about the Handibot on this blog and thought that it had potential to be a very useful and unique. At the time I wasn't sure how it was going to pan out, but I was hopeful. I didn't hear much about the new tool since then. I'm glad to see it pop up again and to hear that it's did well on kickstarter and that it works well.

I've been following NYC Resistor on the internet since it started years ago. The projects that they brought to Maker Faire look very cool. I love the idea of using an old oscilloscope to play a video game in 2013 since that's how the very first computer games worked. I am a giant fan of Doctor Who and of group games, so a game where six people do crazy things to "fly a tadis" sounds amazing. There is also a video that made me want to give it a go even more.

The little detail about how the wifi was still set to the other side of the country was cute. It reminds me that even though Maker Faire is a giant event it's still run by real people that do silly things sometimes.

Although I have not yet had much experience using a CNC router, I am familiar with how they operate, what they do, and how they can be used. The Handibot looks like a potentially extremely useful tool. To be able to utilize the functions of the router in a portable and versatile way is truly mind boggling. This could potentially open up avenues for new methods of construction and even just for household projects. I am curious to see how this product develops and where it will end up in the future.
