Stage Directions: Vectorworks has updated Vectorworks Nomad, their mobile application, so that it is compatible with the latest mobile operating system for Apple devices, iOS 7. The app had already accepted the new Vectorworks 2014 file format, and now matches the look and feel of the new OS. Planned updates for the app include the addition of cloud storage and better interactions with measurement.

So this article did not make entirely clear what the difference between Vectorworks and Vectorworks Nomad is, but if they are at all similar then this is seriously impressive. I am just blown away that something as complex as Vectorworks can be used on a mobile device. One thing that I am confused about is I know that many files on Vectorworks are ridiculously large and there for would not be compatible with a phone in the exact same format, but this article says that they are, so I would be interested to see exactly what they mean by that. Also if they can get the cloud feature up and running like they plan this this could be truly amazing. It would make working so much more accessible and sharing such large files so much easier. I do wonder how much longer it takes to complete a task on the phone than it does to do that same thing on the computer, often times just things like smaller screens make working more difficult. At the same time though a touch screen might make things a lot easier. I wonder if they are working on one for the iPad, that seems like it could be the best of both worlds.
Much like the autodesk product that allows you to navigate drawings on your phone, you will be able to work remotely but there is limited power in the program. It is a display tool and like its competitors it is on a screen that is only big enough to make it useful as a last resort tool to show ideas. I agree that the screen size of an Ipad would be much easier to use and see and an app for the Ipad I think would actually be useful but this program would not be useful to change drawings on the run if they are in 3D, you might be able to edit 2D drawings and it would be useful as a reference tool but I think that the fact that it is on a phone really limits the usefulness of this product. It is cool that Vectorworks is staying current and are trying to make a mobile version but until they figure out a good interface for editing drawings live on that small of a screen it is just an interesting toy.
