The Technical Theatre Awards Reveals Winners at PLASA Ceremony

Lighting&Sound America Online - News: The first ever Technical Theatre Awards (TTA) -- celebrating the best of "behind the scenes" skill and talent -- were presented at a well-attended ceremony at the PLASA Show at London's ExCel. Fifteen awards were announced on the Theatres Trust stand in the midst of the PLASA hubbub.

I think what makes this particularly noteworthy is that theatre technicians are in a constant losing battle for attention. We arent the kind of people who necessarily want attention, but when people take the time to remember all the effort we put into the arts, which is at least equal to that of the director and actors, its really nice. Very few people choose a show to see because oif who was the lighting designer or the sound designer, and giving awards to tech at such big award shows like this is an excellent t way for the people of theatre to remember who's making the shows happen.

I think it is nice when technical theatre people are recognized for their hard work. I never know whether or not I am insulted when someone goes to a sound board op or mixer and compliments them on my lighting after a show. Usually I just think it is funny. So that being said I like these awards because our profession always needs patrons, but I disagree with Ruben when he says we need attention. It really bugs me when the cast points to the booth for the audience to applause the tech crew for their work after a show. At the same time the work should be recognized.

I think that it is great when technicians get highlighted for their work on shows. More often then not people forget that more than acting goes into theater and it is awesome to see that remembered. I thought it was especially great that there was a stage management award because that is some thing that isn't even present on the highest level of theater accolades. I do however wonder with what criteria that award is decided.
