First of all, I'm in the article's picture (lots of us are), so that's way cool. It was really awesome having Billy come back to the school and hearing him speak. The part of his speaking that stuck with me the most was when he talked about the break he took from acting. It seems like a huge risk to take a break in such a competitive field, but he showed up it can be really beneficial to step back from your work and try something new. It can inspire you and help you grow, and both an artist and a person.
Hey! I know those people! It was really a cool experience to work with students to organize painting the Fence and going to hear Billy Porter talk about his experience in the theater world. The thing I found most fascinating about his talk was his discussion on the idea of finding what makes you you. I think far too often in this industry (and this world for that matter) we have people who want nothing more than to be someone else, whether that means a specific person or just a type of person. But what good is that? Billy Porter mentioned that it takes a village. And a village made up of so many different types of people. I think that if we leave Carnegie Mellon with not only the skills we have been taught here, but a sense of who we are, we are going to be the most successful class of CMU's history.
Having Billy Porter come to speak at CMU was a true blessing. Billy is an extremely inspiration, talented, beautiful, and amazing performer. Having a chance to speak with Billy was fantastic, as well. Much of what Billy stated during his Q&A was extremely interesting to me. When Billy discussed his road to Broadway and all of the bumps that were in that road, it was inspiring to see that he was persistent and made it back to Broadway this year. Having Billy Porter as one of CMU's Mafia is also a blessing. The CMU representation at the Tony Awards this year was unreal. He truly embodies all that CMU has taught me so far.
