TribLIVE: An exhibition of art from around the world is bringing international attention to the Pittsburgh region.
Opening weekend for the 2013 Carnegie International at the Carnegie Museum of Art kicked off Oct. 4, drawing artists and enthusiasts from around the globe for a series of private events. The public opening is at 10 a.m. Oct. 5.

I am very interested in seeing this year's Carnegie International. I remember going to see the last one (Life on Mars), and I'm still amazed by some of the pieces that I saw there. One of my favorites was the bracelet wishing wall. I can't wait to see what this years Carnegie International has to offer.
We were sent to the museum to sketch for drawing class, so I got to look through some of these pieces. They were really neat. Lots of them incorporated technology in very cool and sometimes chaotic ways. There was lots of sculpture and only a few 2D pieces, which was interesting. It seems that art from all over the world has shifted into a more 3D and interactive form of expression. I definitely plan on going back to the exhibit when I'm not pressed for time to I can take a closer look.
This past weekend I went to the museum, and I was quite surprised by the extreme variation in the style, form, and medium of the pieces. I really did get the feeling that the exhibition was a sampling of diverse artists' work from throughout the world, meaning that the curators had fulfilled their goal. What particularly struck me was that almost all of the pieces had one comment or another on the world we currently live in, which tied them all together in a way I couldn't quite explain.
The Carnegie International is such an interesting concept and I love how I get to experience this amazing exhibit during my four years at CMU. This is one place where countries around the world can come together at one place and put up their incredible art. I thought the theme of beauty and dissonance was a greta choice. The author said, " Art is there to seduce you, play with you and lead you in different directions." I think this is especially true when the art comes from around the world and the cultures clash together creating interesting perspectives. Over the years, when the festival first started to where it is now has brought the country together at Pittsburgh,. Having the festival every five years makes it a huge production and draws a ton of attention from around the world. I can't wait to go visit the exhibit and experience some very amazing art.
