Miami City Ballet Management Held a Captive Audience Meeting
American Guild of Musical Artists: Ever heard of a "Captive Audience Meeting"? Let's break it down. It's a meeting where employees (in this case, the dancers of Miami City Ballet) are required to attend and listen to anti-union messages from their employer (Miami City Ballet). For example, the meeting on April 9 was a scheduled part of the MCB dancers’ day.

I can’t believe this is allowed! I have never heard of a captive audience meeting before, and when I first saw this article I thought that for sure there would be something in here about how that’s illegal, and what steps are being taken in order to ensure that this never happens again. It was very disappointing to learn that this is a practice that is allowed in 44 states, although when I searched up what states banned these captive audience meetings, I came up with seven. (These seven states are Oregon, Connecticut, New York, Minnesota, Maine, and Wisconsin (although not enforced in Wisconsin)). It was interesting that most of these states banned this in 2022 or 2023, so I hope that this is a pattern that we will begin to see across the states very soon, especially to avoid meetings like this, where everyone is forced to listen to an hour of anti-union rhetoric.
