Lack of diversity within UK's creative industries revealed

www.dezeen.com: Official statistics published by the UK government reveal that white males are dominating the creative industries, with women filling less than 40 per cent of jobs – although the gap is narrowing in architecture and design. A report published by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in late July charted strong economic growth in its sectors – but also highlighted a lack of racial and gender diversity.

Acknowledging the problem is the first crucial step towards making real changes. It's like finally turning on the light in a room that's been dim for too long. Once we see clearly what the issues are. Be it gender imbalance, racial disparities, or lack of inclusion in theater and beyond. We can't unsee them. And honestly, that’s a good thing. It's stirring to know that people in the industry are not only becoming aware but are also eager to roll up their sleeves and do the work needed to make things better. Whether it’s through inclusive casting, fair pay, or adding roles like intimacy coordinators to protect artists, each step is part of crafting a more inclusive community. These actions help create a space where everyone can bring their whole selves to their art without compromise. And I think we should keep the conversation going. Chat about it in the green rooms, in meetings, on social media.

It was not surprising to learn that art and design spaces in the United Kingdom are dominated by white males. There is a similar issue in the United States and the same does for the design and production side of theatre in this country. Even at this university, across all grades of the design and production major, there are only two black students which made me really hesitant on committing to this school. I think it is really important to make design and production more accessible to students in younger grades. A lot of people do not even know what this field is, nor do they know how to get into it. I think that exposing this to younger generations and showing them the very real career opportunities would create more diversity in this field. Diversity in any field is important, but I think especially in art. It allows for so much more creative when people of different backgrounds and experiences collaborate to create something meaningful
