MPTF, IATSE, Teamsters, Food Drive Supports Entertainment Industry Workers Amid Work Stoppages

IATSE: On August 24th, the power of unity and solidarity was on full display on the Motion Picture and Television Fund Campus (MPTF), where an incredible team of over 200 volunteers from IATSE, Teamsters, the MPTF, LA Food Bank, and LA County Federation of Labor hosted a food drive to assist those impacted by the ongoing work stoppages in the film and television industry.

This ongoing strike is something I never expected to go on this long but the incredible support from other unions and from people outside the film industry has helped to be able to go on long enough that it likely will result in very positive outcomes. In the midst of constant union busting tactics it is phenomenal to see so many people coming together to support the writers and actors, everyone from teachers to flight attendants have come out to support them in one way or another, hopefully the success of this strike can give other groups such as amazon workers the courage to come together in their own union. This event will allow for so many people to continue striking for just that much longer without fear of not having food. Hopefully soon companies will get the picture that these unions will not cease until their demands are met, but until then things like this are fantastic to see.

This article was so nice to read. There is so much negativity in the world and it made me feel really great to read about humans just supporting other humans. It makes me so happy to know that once I finish my time at CMU I will be entering a community that, for the most part, supports and stands up for one another. The IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb said, “We take care of our own. Our commitment doesn’t stop when the cameras are off or the stages are empty, it strengthens,” and that filled me with joy. Also, they appear to be doing this quite effectively considering they distributed 1,000 products in 4 hours with entirely volunteers. The people distributing the products are probably also struggling due to the lack of work caused by the strikes so it is doubly nice of them to give up their day to help others. I also thought the photos were very sweet.
