Food Network's Worst Cooks in America gets shut down as crew goes on strike

www.yahoo.com: Reality TV has broadly been unaffected by the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes. But that doesn't mean it's without its own labor issues. A new strike has shut down an upcoming season of Food Network's Worst Cooks in America

Honestly, I am very surprised that the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) doesn't have a contract with Worst Cooks in America (or Food Network or the production company Objective Media Group). Reality television is such a large market in the entertainment industry with very large crews on some shows that make a union seem necessary - and clearly it is, if they are not being paid industry standard wages. The timing seems to make sense, though. I think it is possible that there will be many more strikes following in WGA and SAG-AFTRA’s footsteps. It is easy to forget that a reality show is still a television show, in need of sets, wardrobe, lighting, camera crews, and more. If IATSE is able to negotiate with the production company it would be a big step in ensuring that the unseen crews of reality television get the fair wages they deserve.
