Disney VFX Workers Announce Intent to Hold Unionization Vote

gizmodo.com: Just three weeks after 52 visual effects workers at Marvel Studios announced they had filed a unionization vote with the National Labor Relations Board, 18 more internal VFX employees at Marvel parent company Disney have now also moved to form their own union, indicating a growing sea change in the demands of the historically non-union VFX industry.

Recently, a super majority of Disney employees have signed authorizations to hold a unionization vote. This is a huge step for the VFX industry, historically plagued by poor working conditions and a lack of empathy from large corporations. The unionization in a prominent company is a massive step for workers rights in this industry, and should lead to more competitive salaries and fairer conditions. Previously, VFX workers, especially rotoscoping artists and other highly detailed, fairly technical work, have had to meet insane deadlines and suffer abuse from superiors. Coinciding with this announcement a new board decision was reached allowing for easier representation of unions. This new decision allows unions to be created much more easily than before, as the process for submitting paperwork and actually becoming a union is much less convoluted. Workers in the entertainment industry are often not very well paid, and overworked by executives and tight deadlines. Thankfully, this should help with union formation, and allow workers access to better services.
