Colorpik Pen draws from its surroundings to draw in 16 million colors

newatlas.com: With regular felt pens, users are limited to the colors of the pens in a set. As you might have guessed, though, the Colorpik Pen is different – it can reproduce 16 million colors, which are scanned from the user's environment.

The technologies that have been introduced to the art world have changed what is possible so drastically and so quickly over the past decade. First with the introduction of digital drawing tablets, and 3d modeling software, and then 3d printing and 3d printing pens, and now the introduction of a pen that has ink cartridges just like a printer and can even take colors from the environment if you feel like drawing something you see around you. This one pen, if it works well, will likely be the next drastic change in art and will hopefully come down in price as it becomes easier to make. The idea that you can not only bring just one marker to make a full color drawing, but also be able to draw something with it’s exact color that easily. If this works as well as it says it does then they will start showing up in every artist’s bag.

Tools for artists are being released all of the time, and the Colorpik pen is one of the coolest examples of a new technology specifically created for the artist space. This pen has a sensor that scans color, and holds multiple ink chambers inside of its body. The Colorpik can mix together multiple colors to produce any of 16.7 million colors. Kind of like a super advanced version of one of those 4 color pens you probably had as a child. Despite the big number, producing 16.7 million colors is actually pretty easy, your computer screens do it all the time. Just like pixels, this pen is using 24 bit color, which allows for 256 steps of brightness in each individual color. By combining these brightnesses with red, green, and blue ink, you can have the full range of color. The most interesting part about this technology is the scanner that is being used to gather the color. Color is a very fickle thing, and can appear differently under different lighting conditions and different environments. The pen scans only how that color is currently presented, so the “true color” might be different. I think that costume and lighting designers would love this, as they would be able to find the hex value of colors they could see.

I think this is a really cool product… at least in the idea. Getting to pick anything seems like it would be the most inspirational tool coming to the art community. Practically I feel like tools like this always end up being a bit too gimmicky to become a staple. A few youtubers make videos about it but that is where its fame dies. This is a shame because I would love to be able to scan anything and use that color instantly, it would be an absolute game changer for traditional art. Not only can you pick any of the 16 million colors but you can also change out the nibs which makes it even more versatile. Right now it’s doing a campaign so it’s not even a fully realized project. This really good be the next big thing in the art world. Lord knows I won’t be spending almost three hundred dollars on a pen, even if it is the pen of the future.

When I clicked onto this article it brought me back to when I was watching TV as a kid and a commercial for a similar product appeared. I really wanted a tool like this because I wanted to be very precise with my drawings of anything and everything. This product seems like it would be very useful to peop[le who are very interested in making their art look as realistic as possible. I think that the pen offering multiple pen heads opens the consumers to either new ways of making art or becoming a tool that is so well ranged that it will become an everyday tool for some artists. This tool does not seem like it is on the market for people that just dabble in art and drawing; it looks like it wants to be viewed for people that are passionate about making their art realistic.
