2024 Oscars: Best Makeup and Hairstyling Predictions

IndieWire: Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster “Barbie” required the makeup and hairstyling team (overseen by Ivana Primorac) to embody the plastic essence of the Mattel dolls through the actors. But it did not necessarily demand a plastic look. Instead, they went for a more grounded concept built around the human ideal. Skin smoothness, color, and proportions were all worked out.

I’m a huge fan of makeup art so obviously I was excited to read this article. I found many things interesting. It’s really cool that each Barbie had their own hair and makeup team. Not only is it nice that all these artists got hired but it also fits into the barbie aesthetic that I think of when I think of Barbie and it’s almost like each artist got their own personal Barbie. The controversy surrounding the Transformation of Bradley Cooper in Maestro was something I had never heard of before reading this article. Basically, they lengthened Bradley Cooper’s nose so that he would resemble Bernstein more and many people consider that to be anti semitic and say they should’ve just cast someone who looked more like Bernstein. Bernstein’s children said they were ok with it and appreciated that the makeup artists took the time and effort to make Cooper resemble their father however I think that the criticisms still have validity. They make me wonder at what point does makeup go too far. I don’t have an answer for that, however it’s an interesting thought to ponder. Also before reading this article I had never heard of Poor Things however now I am very excited to watch it. The coolest part about this article for me was learning that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY USED A RECORD TOTAL OF 22,500 PROSTHETICS!!! THAT’S CRAZY AND SO COOL!! I can’t imagine what 22 thousand prosthetics even looks like.

I find it interesting that the new Exorcist movie, the Little Mermaid, and the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie are predicted to be standouts for best makeup and hairstyling at the oscars. The Little Mermaid appears to use so much CGI, quite honestly I thought it looked bad. If floating hair could be considered makeup then I would understand, but floating isn’t due to makeup. No Guardians of the Galaxy movie has ever won an Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling, and the makeup and hair is about the same as every other movie. I see no reason why it should be any different this year. It seems like the Academy tends to like serious and realistic movies where actors are transformed into alternate versions of themselves, as in Oppenheimer or Maestro. Asteroid City and Barbie also seem like forerunners as the makeup and hair is so distinctive yet fits with the film.
