Fran Drescher says actors strike she's leading is an 'inflection point' that goes beyond Hollywood

AP News: Fran Drescher believes that the walkouts that have shut down Hollywood are about something much bigger than the actors union she leads, or the writers striking alongside them, or the entertainment industry.

I think that Drescher’s idea of the strike “taking on a bigger scope” and affecting the idea of large corporations, not simply those in entertainment is quite interesting, and definitely has some legitimacy. Whereas sometimes issues or events within the entertainment world can go unnoticed to those outside the industry, the SAG strike has turned some heads. From viewing their favorite celebrities on social media discussing it, or simply through the grapevine, most people I know seem to be tuned-into what’s happening. I even had a discussion about the strike in one of my classes in high school. As well as her point on the expanding audience of the strike, I think her idea of working simply for profit is also relevant. I’m personally a believer in prioritizing the work, and (hopefully) if you do good and creative work, work you’re passionate about, the quality will be so much better and eventually (in the long run) produce a higher profit. There’s a reason that Everything Everywhere All At Once dominated the award season this past year, versus the countless remakes being made for a quick cashflow by the studios. I’m hoping that the pendulum will shift after the strike, and CEO’s and corporations will renew their appreciation for artists and the idea of creativity–taking a risk isn’t always a bad choice.
