Pinky Swear Productions: Theater by and for badass women

DC Theater Arts: Some theaters are built on a wing and a prayer. Pinky Swear Productions was built on a wink and a swear. A pinky swear — you remember that indelible promise made on an elementary school playground when recess ruled the day. Two friends — or foes — make a promise and swear it by hooking and shaking their pinky fingers.

I was surprised reading this article to discover that there was a DC feminist theatre company (Pinky Swear Productions) that I had never heard of before, as I am a DC native with a specific interest in feminist theatre and literature. Once I read the article, I became eager to learn more about Pinky Swear Production and their feminist mission. One section of the article I found particularly interesting was artistic director Karen Lange’s comment on the lack of powerful roles for older women in theatre. I’m well aware of the mindset that female musicians and TV/film actresses must “peak” well before their male counterparts to remain relevant, however, never reflected on how this connects with dramatic writing and casting. Reflecting on Lange’s comment made me realize that there truly are few nuanced roles for women over forty in theater that I’m aware of outside of the token matriarch or comedic relief senior women. After reading this article, I’m excited to explore the National New Play Network that Lange mentions and find more feminist theatre works for mature women. - Delaney Price for Production Science
