Theater Camp Costume Designer on Designing T-Shirts for Ben Platt, Career

The Hollywood Reporter: While in production for Theater Camp, costume designer Michelle J. Li took a trip down memory lane to visit her high school theater department to figure out what kids were really wearing these days. “I wanted to gain a sense of authenticity,” Li tells The Hollywood Reporter. With a background in theater that led her to the Carnegie Mellon drama school, along with a lifetime of attending Broadway shows with her family, Li, the daughter of Chinese immigrants, always knew she would end up in a creative field.

I loved the theater camp movie and I knew that the set designer went to CMU so I thought this article would be super fun to read and it totally was! Michelle’s research process was super sweet in the sense that she just went back and toured her high school theater which I think is a great and super authentic way that she collected research. She also has some funny stories about working on the show. For instance she talks about making the fake show t-shirts that Ben Platt wears throughout the movie. Ben had actually gone to her with a bunch of different titles of fictional shows and then just told her to make up design graphics for them. That frankly sounds like the most fun project ever. Especially with the show titles being things like A Hanukkah Divorce, The Briefcase, and The Door & the Salad. I imagine Michelle had a lot of fun with those. She also hand tie dyed all the shirts to make them feel more authentic which I think is an amazing little detail that totally brought the movie to life
