Best Production Design at the Oscars: What genres win the most?

GoldDerby: Below-the-line categories at the Oscars just don’t get the attention they deserve. The artistry on display helps to bring to life a movie. Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.

I found the observation that most of the movies that win the best production design oscar are set or based in the real world. It makes sense as it is often harder to create a convincing and awe-inspiring fictional world because you have to create everything from scratch. When you are designing a set that is set in the real world, you can use reference photos and everyday observations to inspire your ideas. When moving onto genres, it is interesting that the main genre to win in the past 10 years is sci-fi movies, which are set in fictional worlds. The other finding about genre was that period pieces are often successful, which makes a lot of sense because there a many pictures that the designers can use from those periods to make the sets more realistic and detailed. The last intriguing find in this article is that all of this author’s top contenders for the award this year are all period pieces and sci-fi films as well.
