What We Do in the Shadows: Costume designer Laura Montogomery

showsnob.com: Known for her work on the FX series What We Do in the Shadows (2019), Darren Lynn Bousman’s Spiral (2021), and David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016). With What We Do in the Shadows showcasing some captivating vampire fashions, it was a treat to interview the series’ costume designer, Laura Montgomery.

What We Do in the Shadows is one of my favorite shows and I'm always impressed by the beautiful & funny costumes so I was really excited when I saw this headline. I appreciated her explaining which aspects of costume design can be learned in school, versus skills you learn best as you work. It was a cool peek behind the curtain when she talked about specific costumes, like the story about the drapery fabric being used for a costume. I do wish the interview style was a little more organic and that she had gone into more detail about what her design process is like over each episode and season. So far season 3 has had a lot of great headpieces so far, and it’s noticeable when characters change their style slightly to reflect the progression of the show. Seeing that she also designed the costumes for Suicide Squad was very impressive, because who doesn’t know someone that’s dressed up like Harley Quinn for Halloween?

I LOVE What We Do in the Shadows. The show has stellar writing, especially revolving around characters. On top of being intellectually genius, the show is visually stunning. What the show doesn't shy away from is embracing the vampire aesthetic. This is not only shown in the gothic-inspired set for the main house, but through the costumes. I loved reading about the costume design, specifically on how the designer used costumers as a method to affect the audience's perception of the characters. Another interesting thing we talked about: the debate of what is considered a prop and what is considered a costume piece. As a previous stage manager, this was something I struggled with. As I am now in the props rotation of stagecraft, I have been able to clarify the grey area that is props vs costumes. Even still, it is very interesting to hear other artist's opinions on the topic.
