Finding new ways to push the medium of theater is intensely exciting, and Punchdrunk has found ways to do it again and again. Having a permanent physical space to work in is going to be monumental for it’s upcoming work. The scale of this project, which I was shocked to learn has been in progress for 10 years, is testament to that. A three-hour immersive show across 2 buildings and 100,000 square feet with a 2-dozen person cast is essentially unheard of. I, for one am very excited to see how this massive undertaking is executed and received by the audience. Although I love traditional theater, there is a different gravitas in such large-scale unconventional projects. Giving artistic companies the agency, space, and audience to do projects like this is how art expands, and how we as designers find new and exciting ways to use our mediums.
