Lincoln Center’s ‘Big Umbrella Outdoors’ welcomes young audiences on the autism spectrum

DC Metro Theater Arts: Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ commitment to audiences with disabilities continues, experimenting with multi-sensory work in an outdoor setting and creating spaces that are socially inclusive and welcoming. Coming the weekend of September 17-19, as part of its Restart Stages initiative, is Big Umbrella Outdoors – a three-day ticketed festival offering performances of music, theater, art, and dance for children on the autism spectrum and their families.

It is encouraging to see priority put on creating theater experiences that are comfortable for people with autism, as the usual types of performances or art ventures are usually overwhelming for an autistic person. They are usually unable to attend other performances that result in sensory overload. I hope this will not be an isolated event; that it will spread so that everyone who wants to experience theater can. This experience is so well thought-out: from families being able to decide what activities they're interested in and what would be the most comfortable for them, to the many opportunities to take breaks in secluded, quiet areas. This breadth shows how much the directors listened to their needs. Especially after the movie “Music” produced and written by singer/songwriter Sia which was incredibly tone-deaf.
