Tales from the West Side: An In-Depth Look at the Evolution of WEST SIDE STORY

www.broadwayworld.com: In the mid 1940s, an actor paid a visit to his longtime friend, choreographer and director, Jerome Robbins. Having recently been cast as Shakespeare's star-crossed male lead, Romeo Montague, in the Bard's tragic tale of Romeo & Juliet, he sought Robbins' expert opinion on how to bring the character to life in a new and modern way. This innocuous brainstorming session between two artists would spark the idea for what would become one of the most seminal and beloved shows in the musical theatre canon, West Side Story.

West Side Story has such a rich history behind it. I could see why since it was based on Romeo and Juliet, which has been around forever, but I have seen this show a few times and everything I have really ever heard about it is controversial. From brown-facing the Jets all the way until now where there is literally a sexual predator in the cast on Broadway, there is always something causing this show to be talked about. Frankly, I do not even really like the show or its plot. I never really liked Romeo and Juliet so this makes sense, but I feel like it is too long and not really a great story. I appreciate its iconicness and it was a really great show to design lighting for, so there is that. I did really want to see what they did with this show on Broadway because it seems like Ivo van Hove has really changed it into something modern and interesting. I will have to wait a little bit to do that, but maybe my mind will be changed about this show.
