“Cry It Out” at City Theatre

The Pittsburgh Tatler: There are likely as many ways to relate to Molly Smith Metzler’s play Cry It Out as there are ways to react as a parent – and particularly as a mother – to the birth of one’s first child.

I have a lot of appreciation for this article because of how it speaks highly of the play while also giving some well intentioned criticism. A lot of times it feels like articles about theater often stray to extremes of positivity or negativity, which isn't always fair or accurate to the production being discussed. That put aside, I think this show sounds really powerful and I am going to try to see it in April. Showing different perspectives and backgrounds in this play is really important to providing a well rounded discussion on maternity and hopefully emphasizes both the fact that women should have a choice about how they want to handle maternity, but also that there are situations that prevent women from getting to make that choice freely. Telling this story from the perspective of women and being written by a woman who has a child of her own makes this piece really important for men to see so that even if we can't understand what these women are going through, we can sympathize and learn.
