Coronavirus: Cirque lays off more than half its staff

www.cirquefascination.com: Late Monday afternoon, the Montreal-based circus — the world’s largest live-touring company — confirmed that more than half of its global staff is being laid off indefinitely: 1,400 staff and technicians from its touring and resident shows and 1,200 artists from its shows. The company says all of the layoffs are temporary.

Cirque du Soleil employs 4,900 people around the world.

This was really tough to see happen. I feel so incredibly bad for the employees that are being affected by this. It really shows the way this is affecting real people when a huge company such as Cirque has to lay off so many people. They have a lot of money so it makes me incredibly nervous for the world and people who work for much smaller companies. I'm sure this is making a lot of other industry professionals nervous. I do understand why Cirque did this though. If they couldn't pay people for the time being, laying them off is probably the best choice because if someone is laid off they can collect unemployment, which is really important at this time. Their other choices were most likely keeping people on staff, but not paying them, or going bankrupt. So, as sad and scary as this is, Cirque probably made a good choice for their employees and their company.
