Coronavirus: Broadway Producers Considering Immediate Shutdown

Deadline: The Broadway League has called an emergency meeting today as theater owners and producers consider a proposal to shut down all Broadway productions immediately over coronavirus concerns, staying dark until Easter Sunday, April 12, Deadline hears.

Such a shutdown could see the industry losing well more than $100 million in a month’s worth of weekly box office alone, not counting advance ticket sales.

At the time I am writing this comment, Broadway has already decided to shut off its lights and go dark for the time being. This most definitely must have been a very tough decision to make. As the article states, this will constitute a loss of over 100 million dollars just in four weeks. That being said, this doesn't even account for pre sale tickets that companies will soon have to refund or reschedule. On top of money issues that producers will face, this is a huge emotional event for the industry. That last time that broadway went dark was after 9/11 and it only went dark for two days. Night shows that day of the attack were canceled and matinees the next day were canceled, but that is it. It is amazing to think how much of a bigger issue this is than that. Closing for weeks is something that absolutely will be remembered forever.

It is crazy how fast everything is changing. This article was two days ago and the mayor of New York City was saying that he doesn’t want to see Broadway go dark. And here we are two days later with all Broadway shows canceled until April. This is just such a sad time because we are all seeing everything we love just stopping and the people who are involved just abandoned. It makes me so sad that so many shows were not able to open and so many people were not able to see live theatre. I am sad for everyone involved in a show who just got there and then had to immediately stop the run of the show. I am really just in a state of shock with everything that is happening. This article says that Broadway was dark or 2 days after 9/11 and now Broadway is dark for an entire month. That is just so insane. It doesn’t feel real.
