Chicago’s Court Theatre must limit audiences to 100 due to coronavirus

Chicago Tribune: Prepare to sit apart from your seatmates at the theater: Chicago’s Court Theatre must limit audiences to no more than 100 patrons.

The nonprofit theater is caught up in new University of Chicago guidelines, announced Tuesday as part of the coronavirus epidemic, limiting gatherings to no more than 100 people. Although it has a measure of independence, Court Theatre operates on the university’s campus and is subject to the regulations.

I was reading this article just as I received the email from CMU about classes being moved remotely. My first thought was about all of the shows and Drama events that would probably be affected by this. I guess some seats are better than no seats? It is really frustrating that these shows cannot be seen at their full capacity, and I want to commend the box office staff for having to deal with these sudden changes. I know that CMU doesn’t mainly make its income from box office sales, but for other theater organizations this is not the case. The article brought up how limiting the seat numbers will change the income potential for the Court Theater. The theater can keep operating, but without receiving the full income it will be more difficult. On this website it says this will be in effect officially until April 15th, but I wonder if this change will remain that long, or if that date will be extended.
