Variety: As part of greater changes to CAA’s salary policy, the agency has raised the starting wage for assistants from $15 to $18 an hour. The revisions were announced at the agency at the start of the year on Jan. 9, a source familiar with the matter tells Variety. Minimum wage for other hourly positions has also been raised.

"So often, the escuse given to defend the horrible pay rates in theatre is that theatres would go out business if they paid their people better. Yet every once in a while, one company or another impliments pay raises and better care for their employees. Is it easy for theatres (or Hollywood) to make these changes? Of course not. But it is not impossible, as it is often made out to be, and if enough companies make changes, it will eventually become the industry standard.
An important aspect to this is brought up at the end of the article: that working in theatre has become a class privaledge. This isn't talked about enough. The stereotype of the starving artist is problematic and it excuses the mistreatment of an entire industry of workers. This and associated stereotypes have long been employed to keep wages down and to create a dichotomy in theatre: you can either do what you love at your own expense, or you can do it at the expense of your wellbeing. "
