Alexei Ratmansky Goes Experimental at New York City Ballet

Theatre Development Fund – TDF: There's an electricity in the air as ten New York City Ballet dancers rehearse a brand-new dance by Alexei Ratmansky. Titled Voices, it's the acclaimed choreographer's first world premiere for the company in three years, and the cast is embracing the challenge of mastering his adventurous movements set to Peter Ablinger's experimental score.

It has been a long time since I have seen a ballet. I feel that is the same for a lot of people in the public today, which is a shame because it is a beautiful art form that dancers work tirelessly to perfect. Unfortunately, it appears to an outsider perspective that not much is being done to shake the art form out of its traditions of classical music. So I was intrigued when I saw both “ballet” and “experimental” in the same sentences. After reading the article and watching a trailer for this upcoming performance, I can say if I had the chance to see the show I absolutely would. The music arranged sounds unusual and I would love to see how ballet adapts to a new sound. I am especially interested in how the show will appear technically with the sound and dance. Overall, it seems like a fun piece in the repetitive nature of ballet. This seems to be great small steps in pushing ballet forward into new directions to appeal to a wider audience.

I have never been to a ballet before but I would really love to at some point. There’s something about ballet that is just indescribably beautiful! The amount of work that the dancers put into the dancers is just crazy! They must go through a lot of emotional and physical stress. This new ballet called Voices sounds very interesting because it’s sort of a combination of theater and dance and is featuring sections of a song cycle called Voices and Piano. The ballet is being choreographed by famous Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. The dancers that are featured have said that they love working with Ratmansky so he must be a very talented and hardworking choreographer. Principal dancer Sara Means said she always ends up doing things she’s never had to do before when Ratmansky is choreographing their dances. This ballet sounds very interesting and different. I wish I had the opportunity to go see it.
