Music meets the sexy and the strange for new Pittsburgh-only variety show Yinzer-lesque

Theater | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: In Pittsburgh, you don’t usually expect to see a fire-eater at an acoustic performance, or a comedian playing to a less-than amused crowd waiting to see their favorite punk band.

Yinzer-lesque, a new variety show featuring local performers representing music, burlesque, comedy, and sideshow arts, seeks to change that.

Yinzer-lesque is a very cursed name, but I've gotta admit that I kind of love it? I love all things strange, and this definitely sounds like it would be right up my alley. In fact, as long as it's cheap and not 21+, I might consider going on Saturday! I'm trying to get a little more comfortable with the uncomfortable in my life, if that makes any sense, and I think shows like this (and even Rocky Horror Picture Show which is just plain weird) are really great at providing that. Some of the descriptions of the acts are way too intriguing to pass up, like Stolen Stitches and its "'unique blend of dark humorous folk songs about the devil' mixed with real-life sideshow acts and some ragtime piano."

Last weekend, CMU hosted Drag Bingo, which was basically (if you can't tell by the name), bingo hosted by three drag queens. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it, but I wanted to try something new, and it was so much fun watching them perform. I think I could surprise myself and enjoy a burlesque show if I gave it a shot!

I don't know of many local variety shows, and this one very much sparked my interest. Burlesque is such a unique and cool art form, and too many of the performers, it brings lots of self power and positivity. Although I myself have never tried for Less, I have friends at different colleges where they offer burlesque lessons and performances. One of my close friends is very involved in the burlesque scene at her school. She discovered her freshman year, and she's met some of her best friends the dance group, and has found a new sense of body love and expression of art. Some of the artists talked about within the article, such as the comedian who has performed in the “long-standing burlesque variety troupe in the Rust Belt”, and the folk-devil performance group sound incredibly intriguing and a unique theatre art variety I suspect would be new to the mainstream, and in my opinion, should definitely be given a chance.
