BSO Cancels East Asia Tour Due to Concerns Over Coronavirus

www.broadwayworld.com: The Boston Symphony Orchestra's four-city tour to East Asia (Seoul, Taipei, Shanghai, and Hong Kong) with Andris Nelsons, February 6-16, has been canceled due to increasing concerns over widely documented official news and government agency reports assessing the spread of the new coronavirus. These concerns, along with discussions with the Shanghai Oriental Art Center-whose leadership informed the BSO about the official cancellations of their upcoming performances-followed by consultations with the tour's presenters in Seoul, Taipei, and Hong Kong, combined to play an influential role in the cancellation of the BSO's East Asia tour.

This article is a great example of the unpredictability in touring. It is quite lucky the tour wasn’t 1 month earlier or the orchestra may have been subject to difficult travel planning and quarantined because of the virus. That being said, I wonder if the fear is over the virus getting orchestra members sick, or worries over creating spaces with many people where others could get sick. This relates to another article I saw announcing that a second movie will premiere online to avoid many people going to movie theatres where they can get sick. Arts industries will be hard hit from this virus and I wonder what it will take to rebuild trust in these industries and trust between large groups of people. Going to space with a large number of people always has a certain amount of risk. Just last week as I was ushering, a patron asked if she and her husband could change seats during intermission because the girl in the seats next to them seemed sick.
