Grammys 2020 Red Carpet: How Billy Porter’s Motorized Hat Came to Be
Vanity Fair: Billy Porter has become a must-have on every red carpet, no matter which industry is being celebrated. There he is serving at the Emmys, at the Tonys, at the Oscars and the Met Gala. As his stylist Sam Ratelle, who estimated that they’ve worked on 150 red carpet looks together, put it to Vanity Fair, “These days, it seems like every time Billy and I look down, we see red.”

While watching the Grammy's me and my classmates were all debating whether or not Billy Porter would show up. Most of us were worried he wouldn't as his background is mostly in television or theater but a little while later, we saw our CMU alum on the red carpet and we all gasped. Billy Porter is always someone who has the personality to draw attention and he always has stunning outfits that fit his attention drawing personality as well. He is one of the few people on the red carpet I don't mind hearing about their outfit as there is always something new and something needed to be explained (in the best way possible). It is also very funny to hear about Billy and his designer always having a new project for a new red carpet that he has been invited too. I am sure that is a fun struggle for his stylist, Sam Ratelle, as they always have to come up with something new and something uniquely stunning.
Billy Porter is truly iconic in modern culture. He is a great performer, is super strong willed and confident in speaking his mind, and makes fearless and bold fashion choices that inspire others. I love that he puts emphasis on having fun. That is one of the hardest things to do when you have so many responsibilities, and once you lose the fun of it all, things become much more mundane. This hat and outfit is fun, fearless, and super unique. I loved seeing all of the photos and videos of it online. I think it is very expressive of the “reveal” and “opulence” that they wanted to express with his red carpet look. The fact that Porter and his stylist, Sam Ratelle, are so collaborative makes me really happy, as it seems they work together to make sure both of them are satisfied with and excited about their creations. They certainly achieve quite a lot together as a design duo.
