Oh thank God. Now is my time to shine. I'm not even reading the article for this comment because I have things! to! say! about this. I saw this production when it premiered on the West End this summer and I swear my whole appreciation for theatre changed. Honestly and truly, this production is the best piece of live theatre I have ever seen. To just begin by talking about the show itself, The Light in The Piazza is the most romantic, innocent, and simply lovely story with the most whimsical and dreamy score. I wish I could live my entire life with the emotions that this show made me feel. Simply beautiful, I really can't express this much more.
And the cast. The casting director deserves an award, a raise, and a really big hug. I'm so happy that Dove Cameron got the opportunity to play Clara because she nailed the role. I seriously can't imagine anyone doing it better, which says so much considering her history as a Disney Channel star. Because of this, it was so easy for people to doubt her talents going into this. I was kind of the same way as I walked into the theater in London. I knew she was talented but oh wow. I was completely blown away by her angelic voice and rawness of her character. I'd give so much to be able to see her in this role again. Not to mention her talent onstage with legends such as Renee Fleming. What an icon. Also Rob Houchen is someone the Broadway world needs to look out for because that boy is a wonder. I sat there in tears as he sang his Italian aria. I don't speak Italian, but somehow I understood every word.
And the design of this show!! The set is just awesome. You feel like you're in Firenze right there with the characters. The grand spiral staircase adds to the fluidity and magic of the show, and it's entertaining to watch the performers interact with the slanted table. The costumes were so elegantly designed and rendered, and the lightly pattered fabrics spoke sophistication and joy. I could go on. I am so glad that the School of Music is doing this show this year; I nearly cried. I just really really love it. Okay! I'm done with my comment but I'll never stop talking about this.
