LED Video Screen & Video Content For Sight & Sound’s Jesus

www.livedesignonline.com: Sight & Sound Theatres bring biblical stories to life within a state-of-the-art, 2,000-seat theatre located in Lancaster, PA with an identical one in Branson, MO. Founded by Glenn and Shirley Eshelman with just a slide projector over 40 years ago, Sight & Sound now encompasses a massive infrastructure of people, buildings, and even animals that help create memorable experiences for the more than one million people that come through its doors each year. Now, its current production, Jesus, is equipped with the latest cutting-edge technology, including one of the largest LED screens ever used in a theatrical production.

Honestly wow! The LED screen at Sight and Sound is absolutely incredible. I can't even begin to think about all of the design work that went into this production. Another incredible feat that they pulled off is flying the 12 ton LED screen. The video media that is projected and cast onto the set and LED screen are stunning. The design work that has gone into this production is work that makes me excited about entering this field one day. I must say I don't want to look at the budget for this show, I don't understand how producers and theaters get the money to put on productions like this. Altogether, the designs look seamless. There are no visible design flaws (in the provided photos) where the lighting and LED screen don't match. Every scene has a beautiful and saturated color palette that gives this show a rich and extravagant feeling. I would love to be able to see this LED screen in action.

This is incredible. This article introduces the massive LED screen that is used by Sight & Sound Theaters, with one located in Lancaster, PA and the other in Branson, MO. The LED screen itself weighs 12 tons and spans across the 114' stage and has a height of 28'. In the article, it describes that they have over 650 employees to work on and produce their shows. All their work is done in house to support their stage that is about 1/3 the size of a football field. The screen itself is made up of "1,242 individual 500mm x 500mm panels with almost 21 million pixels." Throughout their production of "Jesus," Sight & Sound had to come up with a way to engineer moving the 12 ton LED screen in and out about a dozen times. Eventually, they ended up teaming up with TAIT to create a giant rig that would be able to fly the screen out 30 ft in 21 seconds.

Wow!! This LED video screen is incredible!! It is amazing how advances in technology are changing theater. The screen itself weighs 12 tons, so they had to bring in a team of people from TAIT just to install a special rigging system in order to fly it in and out! Sight and Sound theater has over 650 employees working on their productions!! The amount of money it must take to put on productions of this size is just unbelievable. As well as the screen, the set pieces are very well done and the costumes are pretty great too! All of the areas of production seem to be really working together in a beautiful way. The color palette is gorgeous. It must be so exciting to work on a show of this scale and with this budget! These photos make me so excited to continue making wonderful theater! I can’t wait to see what I will do this year and beyond!

That LED screen is insane. It is very interesting to see the development of this kind of digital technology in the theatre. It’s fascinating to know how heavy it is and I can’t even begin to imagine the logistics of loading it in and getting it ready to fly. And then it flies so quickly! Part of the theatre experience is the collaborative work that takes place, so it’s very smart that they have systems in place to make efficient connections between the video/media department and the other elements of design so that they can all be on the same page. This production seems like quite the undertaking. It appears that there are many large set pieces to span the huge stage, so it makes sense that they have over 650 employees who work together to help bring this show to life. The large screen must be very immersive for the audience since it is so large.

The magnitude of that LED screen is just absolutely crazy. It is so interesting how they took that technology and replaced the cyc which has been in place for a while. This just shows how technology can really be used to aid a production if used in the correct way. I think it’s important to combine advanced technology with older technology to come up with the best medium between the two. Technology was used all around, however. The screen was so massive that Sight and Sound had to team up with TAIT to design a specific rigging system just to fly this incredibly heavy piece of technology. Not only that, but the system used for sound was cutting edge as well. Overall, Sight and Sound did a really amazing job combining the old and the new. The scenery has a lot of the traditional elements of design, and then coupled with the screen at 7% brightness, it makes it look like one cohesive piece that has been there the whole time. They take something that is unnatural and make it natural.
